 Rampart Tactics Introduction:

Rampart, a video game from 1990 jointly developed by Atari Games and Midway Games, blends elements of shoot 'em up, strategy, and puzzle genres. Originally introduced as an arcade game featuring trackball controls, it was later adapted for home gaming systems. Its initial release in the United States was limited in October 1990, followed by a broader release in early 1991. In Japan, Namco handled its distribution.

In Rampart, players assume control of a territory comprised of a protective wall surrounding a collection of castles and cannons. The gameplay revolves around two distinct phases, each with a time constraint: building and combat. During the building phase, players endeavor to repair damage from previous combat and expand their territory. In contrast, the combat phase tasks players with inflicting damage upon the enemy using their cannons. In single-player mode, the player faces off against a fleet of attacking ships, while in multiplayer mode, players engage in battles against each other, with rivers separating the opposing sides.

Gameplay:

The game commences with an automated building phase, during which the computer constructs a protective wall around one of the castles. Owning a castle grants players control over a specific number of cannons. Following the wall construction, the game transitions into a phase where the player strategically places cannons within their controlled territory.

In single-player mode, the combat phase unfolds as the player confronts incoming ships that approach their territory while bombarding the walls with cannons. To retaliate, the player fires their cannons at the moving ships, requiring them to anticipate the ships' movements due to the relatively slow speed of the cannonballs. In multiplayer mode, players target each other's walls, aiming to create breaches. Combat concludes when the player successfully sinks a designated number of ships or, in two-player mode, after a set time.

At the conclusion of combat, the player forfeits control of any area no longer completely enclosed by their wall, along with any cannons in that region. Subsequently, a user-controlled building phase ensues. Shapes resembling those in Tetris appear, and players manipulate and rotate them to close gaps in the existing wall or expand it around additional castles.

When the time for tile placement ends, any castle or cannon entirely surrounded by an unbroken wall becomes part of the player's territory. The cycle then repeats with cannon placement. Each fully enclosed castle provides the player with one cannon during each arming phase (the home castle grants two), contingent upon available space.

Final Words:

Repairing damage sustained during the combat phase can be challenging, as the blocks are generally larger than the gaps they must fill. Additionally, excess parts of a block become obstacles for placing future blocks, further complicating the restoration process.

The player faces defeat when they fail to have at least one castle fully enclosed after the tile placement phase. In single-player games, there are six fixed levels, while in two-player modes, the player with the higher score emerges victorious. For players who defeat their opponent, various execution methods can be chosen, including walking the plank or beheading. Cannons can be destroyed, and bonus squares offer extra points when captured. Victory is achieved when there are no remaining grunts or craters on the field.
